What makes and EA different?
If you have an effective EA you’ll know that there’s some key skills and things that set them apart. If you’ve never had an EA before you don’t know what you’re missing!

What makes an EA different
“If we didn’t have EA’s who would make the coffee and do the filing” – an actual statement made to me.
Now, someone needs to do these things and there is no task that is ‘beneath’ an EA but the misunderstanding and perception of what an EA does and what value they can bring might need a little clarification. If you have an effective EA you’ll know that there’s some key skills and things that set them apart.
If you’ve never had an EA before you don’t know what you’re missing!
Here’s my top 5 things that makes a stand out EA…
1. Strategic Partner
An EA is not just an assistant; they are a strategic partner. They understand the business's goals, priorities, and challenges and work proactively to support the executive in achieving these objectives. By managing time efficiently, prioritising tasks, and anticipating needs, an EA ensures you can focus on high-level strategic decisions.
2. Expert Communicator
Effective communication is at the heart of an EA's role. They act as a liaison between you and various stakeholders, including employees, clients, and partners. This requires exceptional interpersonal skills, discretion, and the ability to convey messages clearly and professionally. An EA's communication prowess ensures that your vision and directives are understood and executed effectively.
3. Organisational Maestro
One of the most visible aspects of an EA's role is their ability to organise and streamline operations. From managing complex schedules and coordinating meetings to handling travel arrangements and event planning, an EA ensures that everything runs smoothly. This organisational expertise extends beyond mere logistics; it involves creating systems and processes that enhance efficiency and productivity across the board. (see also herding cats)
4. Problem Solver
An EA is often the first point of contact when issues arise. Their ability to think critically and solve problems quickly is crucial. Whether it's a last-minute change in plans, a technical glitch, or a personnel issue, an EA handles these challenges with grace and competence, minimising disruption and keeping your day on track.
5. Confidential Advisor
Trust is the cornerstone of the relationship you have with your EA. You’ll often share sensitive information with your EA, who must maintain the highest levels of confidentiality and integrity. This trust allows the EA to act as a confidential advisor, providing honest feedback and insights that help you make informed decisions.
Basically, if you are a consultant, coach or someone who needs to be doing your craft to run your business. Getting yourself an EA will be a game changer. They are going to help you execute your strategy and be the unicorn behind the scenes making things happen whilst you are front of house killing it.
If you have an EA, 99% of us like chocolate.
If you don’t have an EA, go get one and thank me later.
Cheers
