I had a bit of a light bulb moment recently. I had quite a few back-end tasks I wanted to get done and I spent ages trying to fit them in by shuffling round my calendar(beautifully colour coded calendar may I add). I then started to find it really easy to make excuses/procrastinate on these tasks. They were things like create an onboarding welcome pack for team members. Create a newsletter template. Build a project management tool for both team members and clients to access. This one was the tipping point because I really bloody needed one. We were getting busier and juggling client work myself with a team and other client relationships was getting harder. A project management tool was a must now.
On one of my procrastinating scrolls of social media I saw Steven Barlett posted a short video where he said:
“once I stopped asking myself how? and started asking myself who? My whole perception changed”
I literally sat there and thought, bloody hell why didn’t I think of that?!
So, what have I done? Well, one of my team is now our Digital lead. She is a whiz at all things digital, has a digital background and is currently building our project management tool. We’re going to be using Click-up and we just have a little more data to input and a bit of team training to do and we’ll be up and running. None of our processes will change as these we’re all pretty simple and they work, just where we house everything and track it all will be in one place which is going to be wayyyyyyy more efficient.
Other things I’ve done is thought what’s my biggest priority at the moment. The answer, lead generation and sales. The best person to do this for Virtually Anything at this moment in time, is me. So, what’s stopping me doing the things to make that happen? Looking at my diary, client work, content creation and administration. So, WHO can solve that problem. MY TEAM!!! I have handed over more client work to a team member, I have a Digital Lead looking after our systems and will soon be moving onto automations and I have another team member behind the scenes rocking my administration and helping me create content.
The result, I have blocks of time I can use to concentrate on lead generation and sales. Whether that is attending events, meeting people for coffee, networking or discovery calls. I can achieve this in my current workday. I am not sacrificing time with my family in an evening, I am not up until midnight, I am not sat at my desk all day every day skipping meals and not taking adequate breaks. I am able to organise my time and prioritise my business because I have people I can delegate to.
So next time you’re in a pickle, want to grow, want to implement something new. Don’t sit there trying to create time because you’re probably not going to. Ask yourself WHO can do this and if the answer is YOU then what else can you get rid of and WHO can do that for you. If you don’t have someone then it’s a sign you either need to outsource or recruit.
I would love to know what challenges you’ve faced and if asking the question WHO instead of HOW has helped.
Good luck!
