Working with an assistant takes time to get right. You’ve got to be in sync and as your assistant we need to be able to anticipate your next move so that we’re always one step ahead. It can be a bit of a journey for the first few months but it’s certainly worth it in the end!
Some things you should know from your assistants point of view so maybe fast track things to get you in sync faster:
- Tell us everything. It’s really frustrating trying to do something with half of the information. I know some stuff is highly confidential but you really need to be able to trust your assistant so that you can get the most out of them.
- Check in with us. Assistants spend all of their time supporting and sometimes I see that we forget to check and see who is supporting them. I check in with my team regularly and I’d encourage a weekly check in as a minimum.
- We all have the same goals. We want to you to reach them and we get a kick out of it when you do. We will often be your biggest cheerleader so bringing us in to your inner circle and letting us help you is only going to benefit everyone.
- We love our job. Most assistants will be in the job because they love to help people. They like making sure everything is running smoothly, everyone is ok and everything is executed to the best of their ability.
- Get to know us. We have lives outside of work, families, hobbies and other interests. We’re going to be working closely together so getting to know each other is only going to build that trust relationship faster and stronger.
When you work with an assistant you get an extension of yourself so getting to know each other better is going to be key to your success.
In the spirit of sharing a fun fact you don’t know about me…. I have a phobia of bananas. Very random, very true. Feel free to make remarks if we get to meet, everyone else does. Just please don’t bring a banana. It won’t go well.
What fun fact could you share with your team today that would make them know just that little bit better?
Cheers
